Independent Study Finds Heron Intelligence's Negative Management Signal Generated More Than 40% Alpha Over Four Years

PR Newswire

validityBase Research tested Heron's research within the Russell 3000 universe over four years, independently backtested the strategy, and built a publicly timestamped index that allows independent validation of the signal's live track record

NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- For more than 20 years, Heron Intelligence has built a proprietary database focused on one of the market's most difficult subjects to evaluate: the quality of corporate management.

Today, the firm announced the results of an independent backtest designed to answer a straightforward question: Can Heron Intelligence's management research predict stock performance?

According to the study, it can.

validityBase Research independently tested Heron Intelligence's significant negative management findings for companies in the Russell 3000 as a systematic short-selling signal. The strategy entered an equal-weighted short position one trading day after each qualifying significant negative finding, with broader-market exposure hedged using iShares Russell 3000 ETF (IWV), and held the position for 24 months.

Over the four-year study period, the strategy generated more than 40% in cumulative returns (i.e. alpha vs the Russell 3000), a Sharpe ratio of 0.72 and annualized alpha of over 9%.

The result was not confined to a single strategy specification. The data produced positive results in the Russell 1000 universe and at every tested holding period of one month or longer, with performance most consistent over 12- to 36-month holding periods.

Heron formulated and developed a methodology; validityBase independently implemented the methodology and calculated the historical results. validityBase also constructed a live index that, beginning March 19, 2026, timestamped each position in the index using a public blockchain ledger, creating a permanent and independently verifiable record of the methodology and reducing the possibility of retroactive changes to the methodology or results.

The performance of the signal reflects the underlying research.

Heron's researchers, many of whom are former investigative journalists, conduct interviews with executives and other operators who have direct knowledge of how companies are managed. Approximately 11% of those interviews result in a significant negative finding about a company's leadership – defined as an overwhelmingly negative interview.

"For 20 years, we have built rigorous research on management, one interview at a time," said David Rynecki, President of Heron Intelligence. "We have long believed that management quality can indicate where a company is heading before the financial results make it visible. This study provides evidence that the research has predictive value."

The backtest included 403 significant negative findings across 302 companies. These findings were not automated sentiment scores. Each finding represents the insights revealed in a direct interview conducted by Heron's researchers where the people closest to a company raised serious concerns.

The results suggest that the market can take months to incorporate information already understood by people who have worked directly with a company's management team.

"Most research firms would not submit their work to this kind of test," said Nate Singer, Chief Executive Officer of Heron Intelligence. "We gave our findings to an independent firm and asked whether they could predict the direction of stock performance. The results indicate that they did. Because every position in the live record is timestamped as part of an independently verifiable audit trail, investors do not simply have to take our word for it—the record can be independently reviewed."

The study is not based on a discontinued or experimental research process. Heron continues to produce the same type of management findings each week for institutional investors, delivering them while the information may still be actionable.

Heron's conclusion is simple: Management intelligence should not be treated merely as a qualitative or "soft" input. When gathered systematically and tested independently, it can be a measurable source of investment alpha.

Both the backtest result and the live independently timestamped performance record is available via the Heron Intelligence Systematic Short Signal (24-Month Hold Period) performance record. Additional information regarding the historical study methodology is available upon request.
